Occasionally an ancestor is uncovered by accident, as an afterthought, serendipitously if you will. Thomas (Kerr) Care is one of ours. Through the presence of this page we initially were presented with a new descendant line of Elizabeth Care Posey. That led, through a couple of phone calls and a brief visit, to an illumination of an ancestor whose life had a significant and clearly defined impact on his neighbors.

Shown below is the descendancy of Thomas (Kerr) Care. Future research may uncover a father who would have immigrated well before the Revolutionary War from Germany.

Thanks to Pam Shenk, Archivist, Tri-County Historical Society in Morgantown, PA and Rebecca Ross, Park Ranger Curator, Hopewell Village, Warwick Twp, Berks Co, PA for their rapid and expert assistance.

What is shown on this page at this point is the tip of the iceberg of information uncovered at Hopewell Village. Thomas Care was a "founder", i.e., the top worker at Hopewell Furnace. An article published in the Summer and Fall issues of the Berks County Historical Society refers to Thomas Care and the Care family as "The Most Important Family at Hopewell Village". Thomas is shown to have worked as the top founder from 1816 until he retired in 1836. The author of the article asserts Care to have earned enough money from his work at the Furnace to have been regarded as, in effect, a "millionaire" by his contemporarys based on the buying power of the dollar in the early 19th Century.

If you are in any way related to the Care's, or any other family centered in time at Hopewell Village in Berks County, PA. certainly be in touch.
